911 - Friendship and communication

14-May-2020 - Saint Matthias, Apostle
Parola di Dio
As the Father loves me, so I also love you. Remain in my love. If you keep my commandments, you will remain in my love, just as I have kept my Father's commandments and remain in his love. "I have told you this so that my joy may be in you and your joy may be complete. This is my commandment: love one another as I love you. No one has greater love than this, to lay down one's life for one's friends. You are my friends if you do what I command you. I no longer call you slaves, because a slave does not know what his master is doing. I have called you friends, because I have told you everything I have heard from my Father. It was not you who chose me, but I who chose you and appointed you to go and bear fruit that will remain, so that whatever you ask the Father in my name he may give you. This I command you: love one another. Jn 15,9-17
For several years, courses in communication have been held anywhere, and I myself have attended to it in schools, companies or hospitals. Even in today's Gospel many words recur which that remind us of the work of communicating: “call”, “hear”, “ask”, “know”. Their meaning, however, is completely different from the usual one, because we are not dealing with professional relationships, or more broadly, social ones, but the relationship binding life indissolubly and which may also require life itself. Immersed in a cultural atmosphere which often interprets the ability to communicate as knowing how to take full personal advantage of the various situations, today we are faced with the proposal made by the Gospel of a communication which is indeed exchange of munus, i.e. gifts, as the etymology of the word suggests, but the gift to offer is the deep friendship, which says and shares everything, without fearing limitations and misunderstandings, without calculation, with the only purpose of loving one another, remaining the Lord’s love. Only by living in this intimate union of hearts we can reach the fullness of joy which Jesus promises us: this is the meaning of being called and sent forth to bear a fruit that remains.
